Full-time (1.0 FTE), 8-hour day, 12 month position

The work involves designing and developing plans as it relates to all data and network activities in the district.   This position requires the use of independent judgment in performing highly complex technical work, including, but not limited to, local area network systems design, installation, and troubleshooting. May coordinate activities of others. Does related work as required.

The following work activities are listed as examples only and in no event shall an employee be limited to only those examples listed here:

  • Designs and develops voice and data network plans for network upgrades and expansions in accordance with district/enterprise objectives;
  • Designs and implements complex voice and data systems and network configurations, including hardware and software technology, site locations, business continuity, disaster recovery, and integration of technologies;
  • Develops system design documentation and related materials;
  • Reviews analyses and technical feasibility to develop voice and data network deployment strategies;
  • Assesses and reviews voice and data network growth forecasts and ensures that district needs are translated into network capacity requirements;
  • Consults with vendors, distributors and users regarding the purchase of network hardware and software related to voice, video and data systems;
  • Responds to requests for proposals, develops cost estimates, project budgets, and resource requirements;
  • Plans, coordinates, and implements security and back-up measures to safeguard information in computer files against accidental or unauthorized modification, destruction or disclosure;
  • Acts as part of the engineering team, assessing the impact of changing needs on voice and data networks;
  • Provides technical advice and assistance to individuals and groups using voice, video and data systems in the identification and solution of technology problems.
Job Qualifications

This is a competitive Civil Service position.  The selected candidate must possess this title, be among the top three of a binding Civil Service Certificate of Eligible List for this title or be among the top three after taking the required Civil Service exam for this title to reach probationary status.  Depending on hire date, it may take up to 9 months before probation is achieved.

A)       Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a Bachelor’s degree or higher and two years of experience in the installation of microcomputer hardware and software and the configuration and administration of local and wide area networks, including the design and engineering of Local Area/Wide Area Networks (LAN/WAN), telecommunication systems, telephone systems, audio/visual systems, and/or server, data, storage and/or telephony; OR

(B)     Associates and four years of experience in the installation of microcomputer hardware and software and the configuration and administration of local and wide area networks, including the design and engineering of Local Area/Wide Area Networks (LAN/WAN), telecommunication systems, telephone systems, audio/visual systems, and/or server, data, storage and/or telephony; OR

(C)     Six years of experience in the installation of microcomputer hardware and software and the configuration and administration of local and wide area networks, including the design and engineering of Local Area/Wide Area Networks (LAN/WAN), telecommunication systems, telephone systems, audio/visual systems, and/or server, data, storage and/or telephony.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:      Must possess a valid Driver's License and maintain such license throughout appointment in this title.
