LOCATION: ELMIRA CITY SCHOOL OR ADDISON CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT 

NETWORK TECHNOLOGY SPECIALIST 

2 Full-time (1.0 FTE), 8-hour day, 12-month, Competitive Civil Service Positions

  • Provides recommendations and creates requisitions on behalf of customers to purchase hardware and software.
  • Works with systems personnel establishing user (customer) and operations communications procedures.
  • Maintains & supports local area network (LAN)/wide area network (WAN) and regional telecommunication systems, telephone systems and/or regional electronic mail systems.
  • Documents computer maintenance, and installs, through help ticket and inventory systems.
  • Configures, installs, maintains, and supports software and peripheral equipment, including printers. Provides hardware and software maintenance, training, and technical support for varied programs.
  • Provides end users first level support for LAN-based applications and provides customer support on networked applications.
  • Assists with Security auditing, enforcement of best practices and creation of new security processes
  • Supports end users in all areas of computer operations, communications, software, and hardware.
  • Assists with the training of users in the operation of computers and software application use.
  • Provides maintenance in a timely manner in response to user requests.
  • Other duties as assigned.

OR

NETWORK TECHNOLOGY SPECIALIST TRAINEE

Full-time (1.0 FTE), 8-hour day, 12-month, Competitive Civil Service Position

This is a trainee position responsible for learning the operations and aspects of a computer-networked environment while participating in an intensive, on-the-job training program.  Once probationary status is achieved, this person will have 52 weeks (1 year) to learn and become progressively responsible for all phases of the position before transitioning into the Network Technology Specialist title.  Work is performed under the direct supervision of the department supervisor and does related work as required.  The following work activities are listed as examples only and in no event shall an employee be limited to only those examples listed here.  The Trainee assists the Network Technology Specialist while learning the following work:

  • Designs, installs, maintains and supports local area network (LAN)/wide area Network (WAN) and regional telecommunication systems, telephone systems and/or regional electronic mail systems;
  • Implements, maintains and troubleshoots telephone systems and LANS;
  • Provides hardware and software maintenance, training and technical support for varied programs;
  • Provides PC desktop troubleshooting and customer support;
  • May act as project manager for computer network implementation in specific school district(s);
  • Supports end users in all areas of computer operations, communications, software and hardware;
  • Acts as liaison between customers, programmers and LAN staff;
  • Provides recommendations and creates requisitions on behalf of customers to purchase hardware and software;
  • Works with systems personnel establishing user (customer) and operations communications procedures;
  • Assists with the training of users in the operation of computers and software application use;
  • Maintains records necessary for determining maintenance and operating efficiency of telecommunication systems;
  • Provides maintenance in a timely manner in response to user requests;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

 

Civil Service Title
NETWORK TECHNOLOGY SPECIALIST / NTS TRAINEE
Job Qualifications

NETWORK TECHNOLOGY SPECIALIST:

This is a competitive Civil Service position.  The selected candidate must possess this title, be among the top three of a binding Civil Service Certificate of Eligible List for this title or be among the top three after taking the required Civil Service exam for this title to reach probationary status.  Depending on hire date, it may take up to 9 months before probation is achieved.

  • Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered two (2) year college with an Associate's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field; OR
  • Completion of sixty (60) college credit hours, fifteen (15) of which shall have been in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field; OR
  • Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma and completion of a one (1) year business certificate program that includes computer coursework and either: 1) 30 college credits, or 2) one (1) year of experience working in a business setting requiring the use of personal computers and multiple software OR
  • Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma and two (2) years’ experience in installation and support of personal computers, computer applications, LANS/WANS and/or data communications; OR
  • A satisfactory equivalent combination of training and experience.

*NOTE:  The BOCES' Computer Network Technology (Career & Technical Education) program and other programs from other states similar to the BOCES' Computer Network Technology (Career & Technical Education) program have been deemed equivalent to the one-year business certificate program that includes computer coursework.

  • Good Communication skills (written and interpersonal) required.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, maintain and support networked PC’s and Windows-based servers is required.
  • Must have working knowledge of Windows 7/10, Windows Server 2008/2012/2016, Hyper-V, MS Office Suite, Apple iPads and PC configuration.
  • Experience working with Microsoft System Center.
  • Sound oral and written communication skills, a high degree of logical reasoning and resourcefulness; sound judgment; tact; patience and physical condition.
